Polycephaly is a research collective and project by Lynn Kodeih and Rachel Dedman.

Based in Beirut, Lebanon, our aim is to engage with contemporary artistic practice in its socio-political context, and initiate expansive conversations and practice around research questions of urgency today. The idea of polycephaly, or manyheadedness, allows for cross-disciplinary engagement, collaboration and disagreement.

Polycephaly is the receipient of a Research, Training and Regional Events Grant from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture. This initial platform is the result of AFAC's support and funding.



Rachel Dedman (b.1989, London) is an independent curator and writer based in Beirut. Current and recent projects include Labour of Love, Palestinian Museum (Ramallah, 2018) Kindling, Fotopub (Slovenia, 2017), Midad: The Public and Intimate Lives of Arabic Calligraphy, Dar el-Nimer (Beirut, 2017); Unravelled, Beirut Art Center (Beirut, 2016); Halcyon, Transart Triennale (Berlin, 2016); At the Seams: A Political History of Palestinian Embroidery, Palestinian Museum (Beirut, 2016); Incidental/Peripheral, MUU Galleria (Helsinki, 2015); and Space Between Our Fingers, Ashkal Alwan, Arab Image Foundation, Mansion, The Hangar, Dawawine (Beirut, 2015). She is the co-founder of artist/curator research collective Polycephaly, and a member of Mansion collective, Beirut.

Rachel writes for Ibraaz, Reorient, Spike Art, and Culture+Conflict, among others, and has received grants and scholarships from Independent Curators International, the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture and the Getty Foundation. She studied History of Art at the Universities of Oxford and Harvard, where she was the Von Clemm Fellow, specialised in art from the Middle-East. In 2013/14 she was a participant of Ashkal Alwan's Home Workspace Program, Beirut.

Lynn Kodeih (b. 1982, Lebanon) lives in Beirut. She works primarily with text, video, performance and its traces. Her work, often merging science and fiction, is interested in the normalisation of violence, past and present mythologies, and what it means to give birth/life in the time of death. Migrating bodies, migration inside the body, porous frontiers and blurred boundaries between what constitutes oneness and otherness, are the subject of her performative project in progress.

She was a fellow artist at Ashkal Alwan Homework Space Program in 2016. Her work has been shown at Homeworks 7, Ashkal Alwan-HWP, Beirut Art Center and 98weeks in Beirut ; deegar art platform/Rybon Art Center, Tehran; Mediterranea 18 Young Artist Biennial, Tirana; Transart Triennale, Berlin; Digital Marrakech, Morocco; Rotterdam Film Festival, Rotterdam ; Museum as a Hub - The New Museum, New York ; Makan House of Arts, Amman ; Kunstbanken Performance Festival, Hamar-Norway.
